Sandra Vásquez de la Horra’s second exhibition at Galerie Rupert Pfab presents a juxtaposition of her drawings and objects with works by the Dutch sculptor Adrian Schoormans.
Sandra Vásquez de la Horra, who was born in Chile in 1967, has a strong interest in religions and philosophies from a wide range of cultures. In her drawings she is at once an anthropologist, an ethnologist and a mythologist. Her creatures drift, tumble or gently wander across the surfaces, seeming lost in time. Their gaze can be mesmerizing, they can introduce us to weird sexual practices, some are childish and gentle, others menacing and aggressive. In all her works, the artist’s hand proceeds tentatively, in a careful search, not driven by any formal concept.
Adrian Schoormans, born in 1962, presents a gallery installation featuring so-called “sleepers” that hang from the ceiling in front of a large cloudy mirror. The term “sleepers” refers to terrorists, who live in the midst of a society waiting inconspicuously under deep cover until they receive a target mission. Schoormans has been investigating this topic since September 11, 2001. His sculptures, colored only by the light tone of their material, have a subtle perceptive quality.
In their complexity, the works of both artists reveal references reaching far beyond a merely fictional construct. Both artists subtly broach issues of death and torture, interweaving their positions to create an exciting dialog.
Sandra Vásquez de la Horra’s works are represented in numerous national and international collections: museum kunst palast, Düsseldorf, Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, Centre Pompidou, Paris and UBS Art Collection, Zurich.
Adrian Schoormans’ sculptures are represented by the collections of the Skulpturenmuseum in Marl and the Sparkasse Essen.
