Lois Renner is known for the precise composition and irony in his narrative pictures. They are all set in a reality which is very familiar to him: the artist’s studio. Lois Renner presents his pictures as photographs, but in the process he works as a painter, sculptor, installation artist and as an architect. He builds the objects and architectural spaces himself, often constructing models of the studio, and then uses photography to translate them to become flat views (“Flachware”), producing photographs with qualities and dimensions similar to those of tablet paintings. Renner’s pictures are always unique.
Lois Renner studied painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Finding himself restricted by the limitations of painting as a medium for his complex ideas, he extended his working method to photography. By translating the scenes depicting his studio to photographic images, the artist is able to experiment with constellations and variations like a painter, to record and rearrange them and finally present their new order.
In his most recent pictures Lois Renner adds a new dimension to his long-term study about the reciprocity between photography and painting: the question of being an artist in a world dominated by digital media. The techniques Renner uses are also a reflection of his position within the art world and in the world as such.
Whilst Lois Renner’s photography seems to direct our perspective towards objects – the outside world –, his painting shows an interior view. The transposition of inside and outside is not only a method, but also the theme of Lois Renner’s pictures. The perspective reveals the essence of his artistic position. New levels of reality emerge and degrees of reality merge – albeit, one cannot really speak of reality, neither in photography nor in painting. Painterly style and photographic naturalism overlap, everything is painting, everything is photography at once. A photograph from his studio becomes a model for a painting, which becomes a model for a photograph, which is in turn is digitally edited. The result is – a photograph? Or is it a painting? In Lois Renner’s work it’s a picture.
Lois Renner was born in Salzburg in 1961. He lives and works in Vienna.
